MEDEA
Tower Hall Theatre, Srilanka.Theatre Olympic .2018 by NSD
A critic's take
It's always a hard task to go for producing a classic and in case of a critical play like Euripedes' MEDEA it becomes tougher due to the high level of expectation of the audience. In the 8th Theatre Olympic organised by the NSD on 11th March the Tripura theatre lovers got an opportunity to witness the play at Rabindra Bhaban. It was a production of the Srilankan team led by its Director Saman Zoysa.
What we witnessed is a wholesome effort by the student artists(the performance was a project work done by the students of a college) to make the audience aware of the legendary masterpiece. In a play the charm of which lay mostly in the dialogues , I was assuming that many of the spectators will leave the hall during the presentation ,but Zoysa saved the evening by blending the chorus with some witty choreography and rhythmic song. It is a saga of a lady who sacrificed all for her love and in return gets an unfaithful husband . She takes revenge and asserts herself in the male dominated "civilized' Greek society. So intense was her revenge that not a scene could be enacted on stage. But Zoysa presented those on stage.,one symbolically and the phillicide on stage.
Critics take: The intense pain and conflict in Medea's character can hardly be felt rather the opposite side i,e the fierce lady gets more importance as a result the intended effect of the classic theatre was missing. Rather in the last scene I felt sympathetic for Jason. The costumes may be improved and the presence of the blue light in opposition to the director's explanation of it being a symbol of conflicting mind during my interaction in the Meet the Director, I found it giving us an effect of calmness. The actor who played Jason ,the ten girls who played the chorus and the two child actresses did their job very well.
Keeping aside all these , it should be kept in mind that it was not at all a day wasted. The audience remained attracted to the play till the last scene. Mr.Saman Zoysa has been working with the students of a college (perhaps each year new batches are coming)and to give them a taste of classical theatre he is successful. His success becomes more interesting when the audience in front of them has become satisfied.
